Commonly Asked Questions

Psychologists are experts in human behaviour. They have studied the brain, memory, learning and human development. They focus on changing behaviour without pharmacological intervention (sometimes medication taken alongside psychological therapy is helpful) and assist by trying to identify and treat the cause, not only the symptoms of an emotional or behavioural difficulty.

Anyone can see a psychologist. Most psychologists help healthy people to find ways of functioning better. These individuals may be seeking help with difficult decisions and/or require help in changing some aspects of their life. We all experience life’s difficulties at different times and can benefit from speaking with a professional. Due to all Psychologist’s registration, they must be competent and follow a strict Code of Conduct.

A therapy or medical treatment is the attempted remediation of a health problem, usually following a medical diagnosis. ‘Therapy’ originates from both Modern Latin ‘therapia’ (the science of medical treatment of disease) and from Ancient Greek ‘therapeia’ meaning “curing, healing, to attend to and take care of”. Therapy is often a very personal journey and can involve a range of approaches aimed at restoring health in various ways.
